Meaning of this Hori song
In this folk song, a gopi of Vrindavan is saying that coming Holi she would spray colour on Krishna, the son of Nand. She'd like to make his dark cheeks red by rubbing gulal powder on them. And would make him dance after dressing him like a girl, to the beat of hand drums called dhap and mrudang.
Girija Devi specializes in Purvang tradition in Indian music from Varanasi. Chaiti, Thumri, Kajari and Hori are some of the jewels she hands down from her gurus, and about eight decades of sadhna (practice). Malini Awasthi is one of her disciples.
This Holi song is sung with the Taj Mahal as its backdrop. Mathura and Vrindavan where this song comes from is about 52 km from Taj Mahal, Agra.
