Jim Corbett’s home at Kaladhungi, Himalaya Road Map

Jim Corbett was a naturalist and conservationist. He rose to fame for his skill in hunting maneater tigers and leaopards. He has many books to his credit, including ‘The Maneaters of Kumaon’. Jim Corbett National Park was renamed after him in 1957. He was born on 25 July 1875 in Nainital (Kumaon Himalayas, India) and breathed his last on 19 April 1955 in Nyeri (Kenya).

Corbett's winter home at Kaladhungi or Choti Haldwani at the base of the Kumaon foothills is now a well preserved museum. It lies on the way from Haldwani to Ramnagar. Haldwani is the closest railway station. Ramnagar is the gateway to Jim Corbett National Park which is famous for its tigers, 500 or so bird species, 4 deer species, rich terai flora, especially Sal and Teak trees. Kaladhungi makes for a great day trip from Ramnagar, Haldwani, Kathgodam or Nainital.

How to reach: Kaldhungi is accessible by train or road from Ramnagar and Haldwani.

Where to stay: Tiger camp at Ramnagar. Kaladhungi is easy to visit on a day trip from Haldwani, Ramnagar or Nainital.

Local food: Apples, plums, apricots, cherries, Fresh corn and rice are local crops. Kumaoni cuisine is known for use of bhang seeds. Bhang is otherwise an intoxicant, but the bhang seed chutney is not so. Thyme is also a locally grown and used herb. Bal Mithai is a sweet that can be taken back home. it stays fresh for a week or more. It is famous in Almora, Nainital and Haldwani. It is a delicious chocolaty sweet made with milk, can sugar, poppy seeds and white sugar.

Where to shop:The gift shop at Jim Corbett's home in Kaldhungi has an array of local produce and memorabilia. Do get back a bottle of rhododendron juice, jams, candles, tiger-themed wooden artifacts and Jim Corbett's books.

Corbett’s home at Kaladhungi is now a well preserved museum. The bungalow where Jim Corbett spent his years from childhood to old age (until he migrated to Kenya) was his winter home at Kaladhungi where he grew up with his siblings. They shifted to ‘Gurney House’ their hillside home in Nainital for summer. Jim Corbett was educated at Nainital’s Sherwood College.

Kaladhungi is also known as Choti Haldwani and it is on the way from Haldwani to Ramnagar. Ramnagar is the most popular gateway to Jim Corbett National Park. For tiger sightings in Jim Corbett National Park, the forest guest house at Dhikala is the chief base.

Jim Corbett National Park makes for a great weekend destination from Delhi, Lucknow, Moradabad, Agra, Bareilli, Pilibhit, Nainital and other places in North India.

Ramnagar is the gateway to Jim Corbett National Park. Just across the road from the forest's buffer zone lie many hotels. River Kosi flows behind the track of hotels.

Haldwani is the twin town to Kathgodam. Kathgodam is the closest railway station to reach Nainital. Haldwani gets its name from the forest of Haldu trees that was once in its place. Haldu trees are still seen in this area, especially in Jim Corbett National Park in great numbers.
