Year 1869-1994: La Martiniere Girls’ College, Lucknow, completed 125 years in 1994

125 years of La Martiniere Girls College Lucknow

This is where I spent a most wonderful childhood. Many thanks to Mrs F. Keelor, Mrs Mclure, Miss Gwendoline Mclure, Mrs Cook, Mrs F. Abraham, Mrs Madan, Ms Cornelius, Mrs Lal, Mrs Dayal, Mrs Masih, Ms Joshi, Ms Koteshwaramma, Mrs Parker, Ms Rehana Ali, Ms Bhatt, Ms Baranawal, Ms Chibber, Mr Ahmed, Tewari ji, Ram Asrey…

Remember most: Geography Projects in Class VI – not just files, we researched everything about the country/culture given to study and enacted scenes from life there, made charts, games, quizzes, competitions; Shakespeare classes, listening to plays in Mrs Keelor’s (Principal’s) drawing room; Gandhi Corner – making matar for the canteen, handling sales, craft, embroidering so many articles, the annual sampler of stiches, recycling jute bags into carpets, cleaning cobwebs, sweeping the floor; visiting Mother Teresa’s home – Prem Niwas; teaching servants’ children after school, Stage and class performances; PT and basketball; Cal-meet, socials at Spence Hall; aroma of food from the boarders’ dining hall; last party in the Principal’s garden, singing everyday; researching for sarva dharma praarthna (we kept on repeating the few Islamic prayers we knew. There was no Google, remember!); the massive stock of books and international magazines in the library, sharing ghost stories in the Study Hall; the progress prize in class VIII made me feel that topping in class was not everything. In La Martiniere, life is for living, celebrating and sharing :)

Icecream Man! Remember him and the Go Go Orange bars for Rs 1  of 20 years ago. He is still the same.

Play practice in the Auditorium

Auditorium LMGC Lko

At the left of the stage in the auditorium is where one of us went up daily to recite the National pledge in Hindi

Mahatma Gandhi

– The National Pledge in Hindi (As I remember saying it in La Martiniere Girls’ College assembly everyday. Hey girls, if I have a word here or there, please correct me in the comments on this page. Thanks.)

The Piano!

La Martiniere Girls Lucknow, Piano

Learnt innumerable songs here with Mrs Ira Madan! The God of love has come to me, I want to pass  it on…It only takes a spark to get a fire going, and soon all those around can warm up in its glowing. That’s how it is with God’s love, once you’ve experienced it. You want to sing, you feel like spring, you want to pass it on…
