Kadam tree in India,

flowering kadamb tree Indian flora

My first acquaintance with a Kadamb tree was through this poem by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, recited by a classmate Divya Singh for a Hindi elocution competition. She won a prize for it too. A Kadamb tree was a rare sight in the 1980s in Lucknow.

Now these trees line the road to my house:) thanks to the U.P. Department of Forests. The Kadamb is now a popular tree used for urban reforestation.

Kadamb flower

kadamb flower in India

The Kadamb flower is a fascinating sight. The Kadamb tree in bloom is visited frequently by butterflies and kids.

how to use kadamb flower

I found these young men harvesting the fruit for eating. Though, the Kadamb is an important tree in Ayurvedic formulae, and used extensively as medicine, I was totally unaware that it was an edible fruit with a slightly tangy taste that kids love. I would have discovered that, had I been around a blooming Kadam tree when I was a kid. I feasted on Gulmohar petals instead.

Other than the poem by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan ji, I heard about Kadam trees in tales of Krishna, Vrindavan and the folk songs that celebrated seasons, devotion and Vrindavan. Recently I found a song by Malini Awasthi ji in Brajbhasha, a Jhoolan song celebrating the rainy season and Sri Radha-Krishna.
