No wonder I felt I was wasting my time at school...

I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and l have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. such wealth l have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that l do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, l propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture. for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.

~ Lord Macaulay’s address to the British Parliament, 2 February, 1835

Do you have any credible reference or citation to back your posting? Why don't you to to British India Archives and look under British Parliamentary Proceedings and look at the official recordings!

hi, srikanth,
the ancient gurukul system of education did produce lasting pillars for mankind, namely the upanishads, vedas, and a great wealth of other experiential literature. these are the best example of what the indian system of education was all about. even now, vedant is new age wisdom..., despite being millenia old.
the British system of education for india was without doubt meant to educate the masses to serve in an organised, methodical British government, but education for the sake of finding oneself, was not exactly the goal.

on  a different note, even ayurveda was made illegal in british india! and now kerala ayurveda is thriving with centers world over. in british india we gained some, we lost some. thanks to mr macaulay and the likes. but that's a natural course of life - change Wink
