Happy Kartik, Tulsi Puja with arti and rangoli

make kolam rangoli

During the whole month of Kartik, starting a day after Sharad Purnima, a special worship is conducted for Tulsi ji (Holy Basil plant) every evening. Tulsi has a very satvik effect on its surroundings. It is used as sacred food for Krishna/Ram/Vishnu with every offering of food. Tulsi beads are used as a necklace to proclaim, ‘I belong to Krishn’ to the wearer. It is a reminder for the wearer. It also has a satvik/healthy effect on the body and mind. Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial wedding of Tulsi to Sri Krishna is celebrated on Tulsi Ekadashi in the month of Kartik, on the 11th day after Diwali.

Organic India (a company famous for growing and supplying organic foods, especially Tulsi) celebrates its annual Tulsi Mahotsav around the time of Tulsi Ekadashi every year in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The daily worship of Tulsi in Kartik month includes an evening arti, lighting a lamp as an offering to the Tulsi plant, with a prayer for oneself’s progress on the path of devotion. A rangoli is made everyday near the Tulsi plant.

Tulsi arti song and meaning

The song means:
I adore Tulsi. While Tulsi is waiting for the wedding ceremony I sing songs of Hari’s praise near her. When the wedding takes place, I witness the ceremony and see Lord Krishna. When she is ready to leave with her husband, I go near her Doli/carriage. She looks lovely in green :-) I adore Tulsi.

The song that accompanies this ceremony in my home goes like this:
