Wall paintings of Orcha Rajmahal, Madhya Pradesh Photo Journal

These paintings are on the stone interiors of Orcha Rajmahal palace. They are about 400-500 year old. The paintings depicts scenes from ancient epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. Scenes from the life of Lord Ram (the chief deity of Orcha. See Ram Raja mandir) and scenes from Vrindavan’s Lord Krishna are a vibrant display in the palace interiors. The ceilings are also painted.

Chaturbhuj Mandir, Laxmi Narayan temple at Orchha, Madhya Pradesh Photo Journal

Chaturbhuj mandir was originally built for Ram Raja from Ayodhya. The present deity is Sri Laxmi Narayan. This temple is directly opposite the palace. The queen could see the arti lights in the temple from her room in the palace.

If you take the road from Khajuraho to Jhansi, you can't miss this palace cum temple town's skyline to your left as you cross River Betwa. It is fascinating, even from that distance, to say the least. Orccha is 18 km from Jhansi, but seems a world apart from city life. True, it isn't a city, it is a well preserved video from history, with colours and sounds just as good as they must have been four centuries ago.
