Surrender happens spontaneously with the knowledge that you are not in control of anything – not even your thoughts or feelings. When you realize that you are not in control of your life, but life is governed by some supreme law, then surrender happens.
Some desire or another will keep troubling your mind day and night. So leave everything on the Guru, and surrender to the Guru.
It is unwise to think that the little mind can do everything in life, or is in control of life. Surrender is a realization that your effort cannot bring forth all that you want in life.
When you are relaxed, you are in a state of surrender. When you are grateful for all that you have been given in life, then you are in a state of surrender. When you are totally helpless, and you realize your helplessness, then you are in a state of surrender.
We think surrender is a sign of weakness, when in fact it is a sign of strength. Surrender comes with knowledge, with realization, and with gratefulness.

Look at your shortcomings and surrender them with faith, ‘These are my shortcomings, I am offering them to you.’ If you have difficulty in surrendering, then just know that there is someone who will rid me of these shortcomings.
Surrender has happened when you know that your life is insignificant in the span of time and space. When you know there are millions and millions of stars, how big the solar system is, where the Earth is – then what is one’s life? When you see this, surrender has happened.
Can you measure water with a stick made of salt? The moment it touches the water, it dissolves. You can never measure with it. So also you and god, in true nature, you are God. Free of guilt, full of surrender, you are God. This is the ultimate goal of this life.
Having surrendered, take full responsibility! If you have taken responsibility, know that there is something bigger than you, and surrender to that! Pray that you get all the strength you need to fulfill your responsibility.
Responsibility and surrender, and intention and surrender are not contrary to each other. In fact, both can go hand in hand. Surrender cannot happen without sankalpa, and sankalpa (intention) will remain incomplete without surrender.
